CLAYTON COUNTY JAIL

In 2004 the residents of Clayton County voted to construct a new law enforcement center housing administration, patrol, jail and dispatch. Since the completion of the construction there are still ongoing issues with the facility both interior and exterior.

Interior maintenance of the building needs to be consistent. The sheriffs’ office does currently employee a maintenance man. The duties assigned to this person do not allow him to do routine janitorial duties. This lack of attention is beginning to show in a building that is only a couple of years old.

The kitchen area of the building is currently only being used to hold files and does not provide the jailers with adequate room, counter space or equipment to prepare the morning meals.

On the exterior roof drainage has been an ongoing problem. In the late summer money was spent on exterior shrubbery. This shrubbery was then removed due to drainage problems. The problems were then resolved and the landscaping was never replaced.

In the inmate housing area there are holding cells that are not being used because they lack proper equipment.

Currently the jail has averaged 10 inmates for the last twelve months.  The old jail held a maximum of 9 inmates.  The new one holds 44.  What can we do to get more inmates in here?  I would like to explore more ways to get inmates in our jail such as housing out of county inmates, working with the area magistrates, judges and county attorney for more county jail sentences and looking into the possibility of housing federal inmates.

Fayette County is currently housing federal inmates to help pay for their jail.  I would be interested in exploring that idea once the new jail is fully operational and passes all inspections.

Although we would need to increase the jail employees this cost would be offset in part by amount of money that the federal prison system would pay for housing these inmates.
